76ers-Magic Preview
GAME: Philadelphia 76ers (22-21) at Orlando Magic (18-23).
TIME: Sunday, 6 p.m. EST.
The Philadelphia 76ers responded to Allen Iverson's first absence of the season with a concerted defensive effort.
They'll have to do it again without the NBA's second-leading scorer when they visit the Orlando Magic.
Iverson, second in the NBA with 33.6 points per game, missed Saturday's 91-76 win over New York with a sprained left ankle. The superstar guard will not make the trip to Florida.
``Allen is one of the few guys that can tolerate a lot of pain,'' 76ers coach Maurice Cheeks said. ``If Allen can't play, you know he's really, really hurt.''
Iverson has scored 40 points against the Magic four times in his career, including a career-high 60-point effort on Feb. 12 in Philadelphia.
Without Iverson, the 76ers allowed their fewest points of the season as they won for the fourth time in five games.
``Everyone had to raise their game a little higher and I thought everyone did,'' Cheeks said.
Philadelphia is 39-58 in Iverson's career when he misses a game.
The Sixers started Kevin Ollie in his place and the journeyman had six points and five assists. John Salmons helped pick up the slack by nearly recording a triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
``We knew it was going to be a struggle on offense, but we had to execute plays and we had to share the ball,'' Salmons said. ``We did a good job of that.''
The win combined with New Jersey's loss at Seattle pulled the Sixers within one-half game of the first-place Nets in the Atlantic Division.
Orlando had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 97-94 loss at New York on Friday. Steve Francis scored a season-high 36 points for the Magic, who fell behind by 25 points and saw their late rally fall short.
``We fell too far in the first half and we really didn't have enough energy to really compete with those guys,'' Francis said. ``Tonight it was unfortunate that we had a bad first half and we weren't able to recover.''
Francis tied a season-low when he scored 11 points Thursday in the Magic's 119-105 over the Sixers in Philadelphia.
The Magic have won three straight home meetings with the Sixers, including both matchups last season. Second-year forward Dwight Howard averaged 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two wins for Orlando.
STANDINGS: 76ers - 2nd place, 1/2 GB, Atlantic Division. Magic - 3rd place, 6 1/2 GB, Southeast Division.
PROBABLE STARTERS: 76ers - F Salmons, F Chris Webber, C Samuel Dalembert, G Andre Iguodala, G Ollie. Magic - F Howard, F Hedo Turkoglu, C Tony Battie, G Francis, G DeShawn Stevenson.

LAST MEETING: Thursday; Magic, 119-115 (OT). At Philadelphia, Pat Garrity sank a pair of 3-pointers to start the scoring in overtime and scored a season-high 24 points as Orlando won its fifth straight.
ROAD/HOME RECORDS: 76ers - 7-13 on the road; Magic - 12-9 at home.

PHILADELPHIA --
Orlando Magic forward Dwight Howard found it difficult to stay quiet, much less calm, inside a movie theater Sunday night.
It wasn't the film he was watching that was making him incredulous. It was Kobe Bryant.
"My friends kept text-messaging me [with updates of Bryant, who was en route to an 81-point game]: I just started yelling, saying, 'This is unreal!' '' Howard said.
"That's not something you could do playing a video game with 24-minute quarters. I got out of the movie and saw that Kobe had 81. I was in awe.''
The movie Howard was watching was, appropriately enough, the basketball flick Glory Road.
The road takes Howard and the Magic (17-22) tonight to Philadelphia's Wachovia Center, home to another of the NBA's most prolific scorers: 76ers guard Allen Iverson.
Howard played against Iverson for the first time last season as a wide-eyed 19-year-old rookie. He'll never forget their last meeting Feb. 12, 2005, in Philly: Iverson scored a career-high 60 points in a 112-99 victory over the Magic.
"Oh, man,'' Howard said. "We were embarrassed.''
The Magic didn't have an answer for "The Answer.'' They didn't even have a suggestion how to slow him.
Iverson made 17-of-36 shots and 24-of-27 free throws.
He averaged 38.5 points against Orlando, although the teams split the four-game series. He won his fourth scoring title last season, finishing at 30.9 points per game and is averaging 33.5 this season, second behind Bryant's 35.9.
Iverson marveled at how the Magic played him one-on-one during his 60-point night, refusing to trap him. Then again, Orlando was one of the league's worst defensive teams under Johnny Davis.
Magic Coach Brian Hill doesn't plan on his defense surrendering that many points to AI. He said Wednesday that Steve Francis would begin the game defending Iverson. DeShawn Stevenson and Keyon Dooling also will likely get a crack at him.
Point guard Jameer Nelson, who plays against Iverson during the summer in Philadelphia, will not be able to join the AI tag-team. He's out with a sprained right foot.
It wasn't as if, Hill said, "one guy has the assignment. The whole team has responsibility'' of monitoring Iverson.
While the Magic have improved defensively, Seattle's Rashard Lewis scored 45 points against them, Sacramento's Mike Bibby had 42 and Detroit's Chauncey Billups had 37. New Jersey's Vince Carter has recorded two 30-point games against them.
They did hold Bryant to 21 points in a 104-88 loss to the L.A. Lakers on Dec. 23 -- the night that Iverson posted his 10th career 50-point game with a 53-point outburst against the Atlanta Hawks.
"On any night he [Iverson] can explode for 40 or 50 points. You hope not 60,'' Hill said. "He handles the ball so much. You have to get it out of his hands. He's a tough customer, constantly attacking. He never gives your defense a chance to relax.''
Stevenson said the Magic must be more physical with the 6-foot Iverson this time around, saying, "You give him different looks. You bump him -- not trying to hurt him -- but frustrate him.''
Francis didn't call Iverson a hired gun, but "a hired cannon. You just try to stay in front of him. He's one of the quickest guys in the league. You just don't let him get easy shots,'' Francis said.

Allen Iverson Biography
Allen Ezail Iverson was born in Hampton, Virginia, on June 7, 1975. The son of Allen Broughton and Ann Iverson, his dad skipped out on the family and he and his sister Brandy were left in the care of their mother Ann. In 1991, Iverson, Brandy and their mother welcomed a new addition to the family, Leisha, who was ill, adding to the family bills.
Iverson had a very poor childhood, one without the basic necessities like electricity, heat or water (a far cry from today, with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and a Mercedes, Range Rover and Bentley). His poor upbringing was one of his reasons for wanting to go pro earlier than expected.
ALLEN IVERSON PLAYS BALL
Although Iverson's mother enrolled him for little league basketball practice, he was more of a football fan, which is what he played in high school along with basketball. In his days at Bethel High School in Hampton, Iverson was a star football and basketball player, and won many awards for both sports, most notably being named Virginia AAA Football Player of the Year, in his junior year as Point Guard and Tailback.
Unfortunately for Iverson, he was sentenced to five years in jail after his involvement in a fight at a bowling alley during his senior year in high school. Due to his incarceration, Iverson missed out on a scholarship to Kentucky University, but as fate would have it (and luckily for Iverson), the governor of Virginia allowed him to get out early if he promised to stay off the courts and work hard at receiving his high school diploma.
He studied while in jail, and after 5 months behind bars, Iverson was set free. In the meantime, Ann Iverson went to Georgetown University to convince Coach John Thompson to be her son's guardian, in terms of coach and father figure. Once Thompson saw Iverson's talent, he accepted to coach him and Iverson was offered a full scholarship to Georgetown University.
JAILBIRD SOARS ON THE COURT
At Georgetown, Iverson was an Arts major, while fascinating fans on the basketball courts. His days at Georgetown were marked by 2 Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards, Rookie of the Year award, 1995-1996 All-Tournament 1st Team, and a Gold Medal for his win at the World University Games in Japan in 1995. He was also Georgetown's All-Time scorer.
As his family situation worsened and he had more mouths to feed (such as his daughter Tiaura, with his then girlfriend Tawanna Turner), Iverson wanted to play professional basketball as soon as possible, which meant leaving school before graduating. He was introduced to David Falk, a respected agent who put his trust in Iverson and ultimately helped him realize his dreams.
Next thing Iverson knew, he and his family were moved to a nicer apartment, and in the June 1996 NBA Drafts, Iverson was the Philadelphia 76ers' #1 pick. In his first season he was named Schick Rookie of the Year, and with his multi-million dollar contract with Reebok, he had a sneaker based on him named the Question (based on his nickname, the Answer).
ANY QUESTIONS?
In his next few years of the NBA, Iverson led the 76ers in the 97-98 season in scoring; was named NBA Player of the Week for the week ending January 18, 1998; named NBA Player of the Month for February in the 98-99 season, led the 76ers in scoring; selected to the 99-00 All-NBA Second Team; finished 7th in the AT&T Shootout during 2000 All-Star weekend; and became the second player in the 99-00 season to score 50 points.
Off the courts, his second season in the NBA were marked by his second Reebok shoe, named the Answer 2 (which has spawned the top-selling line of "Question" and "Answer" sneakers) and the birth of his second son, Allen Iverson Jr., (Iverson refers to him as Deuce), with his long-time girlfriend.
He also released a rap album entitled Slow Motion, which features appearances by his friends Ma$e, Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat and Kool-G-Rap.
In addition to the luxury cars and jewelry he owns, Allen also has approximately 21 tattoos, including "VA's Finest" on his left forearm; Tiuara and Deuce (his kids' names) on his right chest; Prayer Hands with his mom's and grandmother's initials on his left chest; "NBN" on his left inner forearm; "Jewelz" written upside down on his right inner forearm; "Bad Rep" on his right forearm; "CRUTHIC," the name of his record company; and "Only the Strong Survive."
RAPPING MVP
During the 2000-2001 NBA Season, Iverson made outstanding plays, which were honored with his being named League MVP. He took the 76ers to the playoffs and despite the team's loss to the Lakers, Iverson was a standout on the courts (despite Kobe's and Shaq's plays) with his fast moves and incredible shots.
The 76ers Shooting Guard is now married to the mother of his two children, and is the pride of his mother, who is present at every game with a sign reading "That's My Boy #3."
Number 3 may be written on his jersey, but Iverson, also known as the Answer, AI and Bubba Chucks, is surely #1 on the courts.
